The Courage to Matter

The Courage to Matter

Why Significance Isn’t Ego—It’s a Calling

This past weekend gave me something I didn’t expect.

Gratitude.

Not the kind we say quickly and move on from…
but the kind that stops you for a moment and makes you really look.

I watched my daughter graduate college.
I watched her being recognized, celebrated, praised by her professors—people who truly saw her.

And I felt overwhelming gratitude.

Grateful for who she has become.
Grateful for her happiness.
Grateful that she is stepping into her life with confidence and direction.

It was a beautiful moment.

But it also made me think about something deeper…

The Need We Don’t Talk About

We all want to feel significant.

Not in an ego-driven way.
Not in a “look at me” kind of way.

But in a very human way.

We want to feel like we matter.
Like our voice counts.
Like what we believe… what we stand for… has meaning.

Tony Robbins talks about this as one of our most basic human needs—
the need for significance.

And yet, so many of us struggle with it.

At different points in our lives, we question:

  • Am I enough?

  • Do I matter?

  • Does anyone even hear me?

Sometimes it shows up quietly.
Sometimes it shows up loud.

But it’s there.

When Silence Stops Being an Option

For me, there were moments when staying quiet no longer felt right.

Moments where I realized…
if I don’t stand for something, I’m choosing not to be seen.

Watching what’s happening in our country.
Seeing how quickly people are labeled, dismissed, or misunderstood.

It did something to me.

It made me realize that having a voice—using your voice—isn’t just a right.

It’s a responsibility.

There comes a point where you stop asking,
“Will people agree with me?”

And you start asking,
“Am I being true to what I believe?”

That shift matters.

Significance Is Not Ego

Let’s be clear about something.

Wanting to feel significant is not a flaw.
It’s not selfish.

It’s human.

Healthy significance says:
"I want to make a difference—for myself and for others.”

It’s rooted in contribution.
In impact.
In meaning.

Ego-driven attention says:
“Look at me so I feel validated.”

That’s not what this is.

This is about standing in your beliefs—without needing approval.

Why I Created The Lion & The Cross

When I started The Lion & The Cross, it wasn’t just about apparel.

It was about identity.

It was about creating something people could wear that says:

This is who I am.
This is what I stand for.
I will not back down.

Because sometimes, wearing something is more than style.

It’s a signal.

A quiet but powerful message to the world…
and to the person standing next to you.

“I’m here.”
“You’re not alone.”

I’ve had people say to me,
“It takes courage to wear that.”

And others say,
“You gave me courage.”

That’s significance.

Not loud.
Not forced.

But real.

The Power of One

A t-shirt doesn’t change the world.

But a person does.

And it only takes one person to stand up…
to speak…
to live with conviction…

for someone else to feel strong enough to do the same.

That’s how movements start.
That’s how belief spreads.

That’s how courage grows.

Gratitude Changes Everything

Here’s what I realized this weekend.

Gratitude grounds us.

It shifts us from:

“What am I missing?” to “Look at what I have.”

And when you live in that space…

You don’t chase significance from emptiness.

You step into it from fullness.

You realize:

You already matter.
Your life already has meaning.
Your voice already has power.

Gratitude doesn’t remove the desire to make a difference.

It strengthens it.

So Let Me Ask You…

Where in your life are you staying quiet?

Where are you holding back your voice… your beliefs… your truth?

And what would happen if you stopped shrinking…

and decided to stand?

Final Thought

You don’t have to change the entire world to matter.

You just need the courage to stand in it.

To be seen.
To be heard.
To live in alignment with what you believe.

Because when you do…

You don’t just find your significance.

You give someone else permission to find theirs.
